If you want to play this game in Retroarch, you have to constantly be fixing the aspect ratio and loading different controller profiles depending on what part of the game you are in. Rather than sticking to a fixed orientation, Klonoa switches between landscape and portrait orientation game play constantly. I find 9:16 to be pretty close, if not exactly correct for wonderswan games. You can go into retroarch and manually set the aspect ratio in the Video setting. It has been an issue for at least three years and there is no reason to believe it will ever change, so we are stuck with it. Retroarch devs seem to be of the opinion that it is a core problem, and the people maintaining the wonderswan core are. Instead, the aspect ratio stays the same, and only the image rotates, and then stretches along the X axis to fit the view window. What should happen when you rotate a wonderswan game, is that the aspect ratio inverts itself to match the new orientation. Unfortunately, it doesn't work very well. Retroarch also allows you to rotate the screen, which is mandatory as all games are displayed by default in landscape orientation. For the most part, wonderswan games play in either landscape or portrait mode, and use either the first setup for buttons or the second setup, and don't mix the two (more on that later). Retroarch supports a wonderswan core, and retroarch allows you to bind different controls for different games. Try figuring out that configuration on a DS4. Wonderswan games allow you to play in either landscape mode, using the X buttons as a dpad and the B/A buttons, or in portrait mode, using the Y buttons as the dpad and the X buttons for gameplay. No, the difficult thing about the wonderswan is its completely unemulatable controls.
